After returning to his ‘parent club’ Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the summer transfer window with a buy-back clause (a contractual provision that allows the club to take him back for an agreed fee), Xavi Simons (20, Netherlands) has continued to dazzle on loan at Leipzig. Leipzig are reportedly ‘delighted’ with his performances and are pushing for a loan extension to keep him at the club.
“Leipzig are keen to continue working with Simmons, who has made a remarkable start to the season,” German outlet Sport Bild reported on Saturday (Aug. 16), adding that “Leipzig believe that a loan extension after the end of this season is the best solution for all parties as PSG are opposed to an outright transfer.”
Indeed, Simmons has been in sensational form since joining Leipzig on loan during last summer’s transfer window. In 11 appearances in the Bundesliga, he’s scored four goals and provided seven assists, the most in any of Europe’s seven major leagues (England, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Netherlands, and Portugal). Leipzig are “very pleased” with his performance and hope to keep him on board next season. Leipzig head coach Marco Rosé (47-Germany) has been open about his desire to keep Simmons, saying, “He’s comfortable here, and he’s stepped up his game with every good performance.” “Of course we want him to stay next season,” he added.
Leipzig, however, have opted to extend the loan deal for another season, as there was no buy-out clause when the deal was signed and PSG have no intention of selling him as they see him as an ‘exceptional talent’ for the future. While there is still a long way to go until the end of the season, Leipzig are expected to sit down with PSG soon to try and reach an agreement.
A highly touted ‘super talent’ in Europe, Simmons has the versatility to play in central midfield, as well as on the flanks and in attacking midfield. He has excellent pressing and soccer intelligence, as well as link-up and playmaking ability. He was considered the “next Iniesta” during his time in La Masia (Barcelona’s youth system).
Simmons left Barcelona for PSG in 2019 and made his professional debut the following year. However, he was unable to survive the tough competition for places and eventually moved to PSV Eindhoven last summer.
