Up front, Lee Jeong-hyeop controlled aerial balls through strong physicality, while Kim Dae-won and Wellington tried to create chances through second balls. Jeju threatened in first-half stoppage time with powerful headers from Yuri and Song Ju-hoon. However, they were denied by goalkeeper Lee Kwang-yeon. Gangwon introduced Gabriel in place of Lee Jeong-hyeop at the start of the second half. Coach Yoon Jung-hwan revealed before the game that Lee Jung-hyeop, who had returned from injury, was only half-game fit. Yoon’s choice paid off in the fifth minute. Wellington broke through on the right and sent in a low cross that was met by the onrushing Gabriel’s right foot and rattled the net.
The flow continued for Gangwon. Yoo and Wellington shook the flanks, while Kim Dae-won supported Gabriel in the second line. Jeju was desperate to break up Kangwon’s strong attack. In the 11th minute of the second half, Alibayev’s shot went over the bar. Acting head coach Jung Joguk made a substitution to stem the tide. He took off Kim Oh-kyu and Kim Seung-seop and brought on Lee Ki-hyuk and Jonatan Ling. Ling hit the post with a left-footed shot in the first minute. Kangwon responded in the 16th minute with a powerful right-footed shot from Gabriel that went just wide of the post.
Jeju took control after the substitution. A breakthrough on the right flank led to a chance for Yuri in the front line. Kangwon blocked it with a physical defense. The second half continued to be a tense affair as both teams passed the midway point. In the 31st minute, Wellington’s powerful shot was not converted into a goal. In the 32nd minute, nerves got the better of both teams and a scuffle ensued. After a four-minute stoppage, the referee issued warnings to Kangwon’s Alibayev and Yoo Sang-hoon and Jeju’s Choi Young-joon and Kim Dong-joon.
Jeju brought on Lee Ju-yong in the 36th minute to bolster their flank. Center back Song Ju-hoon moved up to the front line. Gangwon brought on long defender Kim Woo-seok in the 39th minute to consolidate. At the end of regulation time, coach Yoon Jung-hwan brought on Hankyoung and Ryu Kwang-hyun.
Nine minutes of second-half stoppage time were awarded. Gabriel faced the goalkeeper after a Jeju defense error, but his chip shot was not quite on target. Jeju pushed for the equalizer. However, Gangwon’s defense was solid. In the fourth minute of extra time, Lee Ju-yong’s rebounded shot went wide. However, Jeju equalized on the ensuing corner kick by Jeong-woon. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
