Japanese soccer just got scarier.
The final brackets for the soccer events at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games have been finalized. With both the men’s and women’s teams decided, Japan has qualified for both the men’s and women’s finals.
First, the women’s team defeated China on April 4 to reach the final. Japan’s women’s team played a back-and-forth game with China, exchanging seven goals. Japan led 4-1 at halftime, but China rallied in the second half. They managed to pull within two goals, but ultimately lost the game, giving Japan the victory.
Japan’s final opponent is North Korea. North Korea is coming off a 9-0 win over Uzbekistan. North Korea had an overwhelming power differential, scoring four goals in the first half and five more in the second.
Japan and North Korea will play the final at 9 p.m. ET on June 6 at the Huanglong Sports Center in Hangzhou, China.
Japan’s men’s national team met Hong Kong in the quarterfinals. Hong Kong pulled off an upset to defeat powerhouse Iran in the quarterfinals.
Hong Kong hoped for an upset against Japan, but they were outmatched. Despite resting some of their key resources, Japan dominated the match and scored four goals to win 4-0.
Japan’s next opponent is eternal rival South Korea. South Korea won a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Uzbekistan on the same day. South Korea took the lead with a goal from Jung Woo-young in the fourth minute of the first half, but gave up an equalizer in the 25th minute. South Korea and Japan also met in the final at the 2018 Jakarta Palembang, where the Koreans won 2-1 in a tightly contested match that went into extra time thanks to goals from Lee Seung-woo and Hwang Hee-chan.
